Posture Setup for Drive

Having a consistent setup every time we address the ball is so important to having a consistent swing and drive. Until watching this video I would address the ball with what I thought was consistence however I was using no key words to remind me some consistent behaviors. I have implemented a few tips from this video and applied them at the driving range to find some great success

Putting Drill to End Short Putting

How frustrating is it when you 3 putt a green?

This putting drill helps you end short putting.

Place a second golf ball in front of the ball, approximately half way between it and the hole. Putt your ball aiming at the center of the ball in front with the intention of knocking this ball into the hole. This drill lets you putt at a smaller target and gives you confidence to knock those short putts directly into the back of the hole.

When you are actually playing golf always visualize the 2nd ball and knocking it into the hole!

Enjoy your new lower score!

Golf Swing Drill - Shoulder Cover

When driving the golf ball I use to be all over the place. I would work consistenacy in my hips, then my shoulders would be crazy, then I would work consistency in my shoulders but my feet would move. I needed simple ways to fix each error that I could remind myself in 1 word keywords in my driving setup. I use this simple Shoulder Cover Drill below.

Shoulder Cover Golf Swing Drill

Golfers that want to stop tilting backward when driving the ball should practice covering the golf ball with their shoulders on the downswing. A good drill to obtain this feeling is to place an alignment stick behind your shoulders and hold it in place with your hands. Make several practice swings pointing one end of the stick high into the air on the backswing, then pointing it directly into the ground on the downswing. This prevents a backward tilt and actually gets the shoulders working forward.”

A Drill to Improve Your Short Game

We all know that an improvement in our short game can drastically lower our overall score. I really liked the ideas for practice I found in this article by vcstar.com

“You don't have to have a practice green to work on your wedges. Lay out five or six towels at different distances and land the ball on those towels. Try hitting high and low shots to the towels. You will be surprised how fast your short game will improve.” - Quote from vcstar.com

Develop a Great Golf Grip

I do a lot of reading about the proper golf grip and I have read this quote multiple times now so it must be of value to pass on to my readers.

"Don't squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube."

Your grip must be a partial relaxed grip. You can develop this grip by using your fingers and not your palms.

Getting comfortable with the proper golf grip can be a tough challenge by feeling quite ackward at first. Here are a few tips to your grip:

  • Your grip must be a partial relaxed grip. You can develop this grip by gripping towards your fingers and not your palms.
  • Your grip should make a "V" (thumb and pointer finger crease). Both hands "V's" should point past your right shoulder (for a right handed golfer)
  • A firm grip is like grabbing an egg, not too light that you could drop it, not to tight to break the egg but "firm" to have control.

Your grip is your only link from you to your club, it is extremely important to get this right and equally important that you have good grips on your clubs. Your golf club regripping should take place once a year or after about 40 rounds of golf.

Great Chipping Drill

Try this challenging chipping drill presented by Tom Denby.

Don’t expect to get through this golf drill fast, to finish this chipping drill it is going to take some time and patience. I know it is going to take me a few attempts, and when I say a few attempts I mean multiple attempts throughout multiple days. I do know that once I can get through this golf drill a few times pretty consistantly my confidence in my short game is going to be at an all time high.

Happy Chipping!

Get the Right Grip

Many times we forget to practice one of the most important things in golf. We continue to work on our swing but we never adjust our connection point: our grip!

“One of the best tips I ever heard regarding golf grip was "don't squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube." It's a common phrase explained in a way that even my children can understand. Basically, your grip on the club should be with your fingers of both hands and not with your palms. You should keep your overall pressure of the grip light, not like you are trying to squeeze toothpaste out of the tube.”

“I had some difficulty learning about the proper grip pressure when I was new to golf. The most of the grip pressure needs to be in the last three fingers of your left hand (if you are right handed) and there is no pressure at all in the thumb and forefinger of the right hand. This felt awkward to me at first, like I was going to slip or drop the club.” Quoted from Lisa Mason on Yahoo Sports

The time and effort we spend at the driving range should include some time getting our grip just right. Make one small change at a time; do not make multiple changes to your grip at once as it gets to be too awkward.

Your grip is your only connection to the golf club, so spend some time getting it right and make sure your golf club grips are in good condition. There should be no extra strokes added to your game because of your equipment.

Regrip your clubs after approximately 40 rounds of golf or once a year. Learn how to regrip golf clubs online as it is quite easy.

Golf Tips for Your Short Game

Here are some golf swing tips for chipping, pitching, backspin and putting. These are what I try to focus on while playing the game as I go through my pre-swing ritual in each situation.

Chipping Tips

  • Strike the ball with a downward swing leading with the hands through the ball
  • Put the ball back in your stance
  • Keep the clubhead low on the follow through

Pitching Tips

  • Start with the ball slightly forward in your stance and your hands centered in front of your body
  • Swing the club and let it move your body, not your body moving the club
  • Let the clubhead swing past your hands

Backspin Tips

  • Open the clubface by shifting my left hand towards the target (right handed golfer)
  • Move the ball up off my left foot (right handed golfer)
  • Hit the ball then turf with a crisp downward strike
  • Do not try to scoop the ball

Putting Tips

  • Swing the putter with your arms not your shoulders
  • Swing the clubhead without moving the handle very much
  • Putt with an accelerating hit

Get out to the driving range and try these tips. If you are looking for other golf swing drills check out my Golf Club Regripping Website.

Golf Tips to Improve Your Drive

One of the biggest things we all know but have a hard time with as male golfers is swinging too hard and trying to get too much distance on our drive. We step up to the ball and our testosterone starts flowing as we think our manhood is judged if we cannot outdrive everyone in the foursome, we reinforce this behavior with games like closest to the pin of the tee box. After our superman swing we yell “shit” as the ball hooks into the far woods. We all know how to straighten our tee shot yet everything changes when we step up to hit that shot. Below is a quote from a great article addressing this issue with factual information.

“In my younger days, I too was guilty of this habit. If we were standing on a 400-yard par-4 and you asked me how far I would like to hit my tee shot, I would have answered '400 yards.”
